Russia expands air defenses around Putin’s Valdai residence
Satellite images show the new towers form an outer air-defense ring aimed south, with fewer than 100,000 people living near the residence, analysts said.
- Satellite imagery analyzed by Radio Liberty on Wednesday, October 21, revealed Russia has established 33 air defense positions around the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan, a major production hub for Shahed-type attack drones.
- Air defenses are being reinforced around the Alabuga special economic zone, where Russians manufacture "Geran/Shahed" attack UAVs, after Russia moved "Shahed" production underground at "Alabuga" to protect these assets.
- Defensive infrastructure includes towers equipped with anti-aircraft machine guns and platforms for The Pantsir or The Tor systems; Chinese suppliers provided industrial airframe production lines, 7,800 lithium-ion batteries, and more than 685,000 engine components valued at about $900,000.
- Radio Liberty noted that extensive fortifications make Alabuga one of Russia's most heavily protected facilities against Ukrainian drone strikes, with no comparable attacks recorded since Ukrainian drones last reached the site in June 2025.
- The complex has reportedly reached a capacity of more than 3,000 gasoline-powered Shahed-type drones and more than 3,500 jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones per month, underscoring the strategic value of the fortified facility.
