Ukraine Would Gain Advantage over Russian Glide Bombs with Gripen-Meteor Combo

Stockholm finalized a package this week providing Ukraine with 16 donated Gripen C/D jets and up to 20 newer Gripen E/F fighters, with the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen jets and long-range Meteor missiles expected to arrive within ten months.

Produced by European company MBDA, the Meteor missile reaches speeds of about 4,600 km/h with an engagement range exceeding 100 kilometers; ArmyInform explained this "long arm" capability allows Ukrainian Gripen pilots to threaten Russian launch aircraft from far greater distances.
The Ministry of Defence stressed that the system can "push Russian aviation farther back and reduce the enemy's ability to carry out mass use of aerial bombs," describing it as a step toward a "qualitatively new architecture" of Ukrainian defense.
Deputy Head of the President's Office Pavlo Palisa wrote that Swedish support reflects a "consistent strategic position" regarding the Russian threat, adding that the aircraft represent a contribution to the security of all of Europe, not just Ukraine.
