Ukraine hits Russian shadow fleet tanker in Mediterranean for first time, SBU says
Ukraine's Security Service said drones critically damaged the Oman-flagged tanker Qendil, part of Russia's shadow fleet used to evade sanctions and fund the war effort.
- On Dec. 19, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said kamikaze drones struck a Russian Project 22460 'Hunter' patrol ship and an oil platform at the Filanovsky field, the SSO reported on Dec. 20.
- Because the Filanovsky oil and gas field supplies export revenue to the Russian budget, SSO says such asymmetric strikes stop Russia's military aggression, with SOF coordinating earlier this month with Chornaya Iskra.
- Several SSO drones successfully hit the targets, the unit said, including a Lukoil-owned platform at Filanovsky field with reserves of 129 million tons of oil and 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
- Damage assessments are ongoing and the platform's operational status remains unclear, while Ukraine's Security Service reported a strike on a Russian "shadow fleet" oil tanker in the Mediterranean on Dec. 19.
- The Caspian strikes follow earlier operations that extended Ukraine's maritime actions beyond the Black Sea, with SOF coordinating with Chornaya Iskra earlier this month and previous patrol vessel strikes.
