Ukraine declares its first homegrown guided aerial bomb combat-ready
The 250-kilogram weapon was developed in 17 months and is meant to counter Russia’s heavy use of cheap glide bombs, officials said.
- Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Ukraine has cleared its first domestically developed guided aerial bomb for combat use after 17 months of development. The Ministry of Defense has procured an initial experimental batch.
- Since 2023, Russia has deployed FAB-series glide bombs at scale against Ukrainian positions, inflicting severe damage across the front line. Ukraine previously lacked domestic equivalents and relied entirely on Western allies for precision standoff strike capability.
- Developed by DG Industry through the Brave1 cluster, the weapon carries a 250-kilogram warhead and strikes targets up to 70 kilometers away. Brave1 emphasized the design is "Ukraine's own KAB," a unique Ukrainian construction adapted specifically to modern warfare conditions.
- The 250-kilogram warhead enables destruction of reinforced concrete bunkers and protected command posts that Russian forces have entrenched over three years. Pilots are currently training on combat scenarios using the new munition.
- This development moves Ukraine toward sovereign production of precision munitions, reducing dependence on foreign supply. Brave1 has established a structured pathway for defense startups to field technology rapidly, increasingly shaping the tactical environment on the front line.
