UK Shoppers Waste £3bn a Year in Forgotten Supermarket Loyalty Points
More than 25% of loyalty points go unspent due to slow rewards and expiring points, causing UK shoppers to lose £3 billion annually, Antavo reports.
- Antavo's Global Customer Loyalty Report 2026 found more than a quarter of loyalty points go unspent and one in 10 expire, costing UK shoppers £3bn annually.
- Survey data show respondents cite friction, lack of convenience, and weak personalisation in loyalty program features, with almost half saying rewards take too long to earn and many frustrated by expiring or unattractive points.
- Participation metrics show 43.2% of consumers are more likely to join loyalty programs, with 81.8% using promotions monthly, and the report warns friction is the enemy of loyalty.
- The report warns unused points act like a 'hidden tax' on busy consumers, and customers may leave while retailers offering tailored loyalty experiences see strong returns.
- Looking ahead, loyalty program participants value retention with 31.3% more likely to stay, while shoppers demand convenient access via mobile apps and digital loyalty cards .
