UK secures record supply of offshore wind but price rises
The auction supports 7,000 jobs and attracts £22 billion in private investment with offshore wind power 40% cheaper than new gas plants, powering 12 million homes.
- The government awarded contracts for 8.4GW of offshore wind with a strike price of 90.91, up 11% on last year, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
- To meet its 2030 clean-power target, the government used the Contracts for Difference mechanism, guaranteeing strike prices underwritten by bill payers with 900m set aside and contracts extended to 20 years.
- The auction attracted roughly £22bn in private investment, securing 7,000 jobs and projects including Dogger Bank South, Norfolk Vanguard, Awel y Môr and Berwick Bank.
- The Conservative party and Reform UK criticised the auction, warning it locks consumers into higher bills, while Energy UK noted the auction price exceeds last year’s average wholesale price of 83 but said comparisons are imperfect.
- Independent analysts Aurora warn that a strike price of 94/MWh would be consumer-neutral, with renewables pushing wholesale prices down by around 30% in 2025, despite the government claiming Britain is 'firmly on track'.

UK secures support for offshore wind in record auction
The UK took a major leap toward its 2030 clean energy targets, awarding subsidy contracts for a record-breaking volume of offshore wind capacity. British authorities granted contracts expected to produce 8.4 GW of energy, enough to power roughly 12 million homes, albeit at higher strike prices — the amount guaranteed to producers per MWh — compared to last year’s auction. This could increase household electricity bills, handing fresh ammunition …
RMT responds to record breaking offshore wind energy procurement
Offshore workers union RMT has commented on a record 8.4GW of wind energy secured in Europe’s biggest ever auction of the renewable. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: The government’s announcement of a record-breaking offshore wind auction shows the scale of what is possible when there is political will to invest in clean energy and long-term infrastructure. Expanding offshore wind capacity is essential if Britain is to cut emissions and…
The UK’s offshore wind auction broke records, but its clean power target remains unrealistic
The UK government has just announced the results of its biggest-ever auction for new offshore wind projects. By doubling the budget at the eleventh hour, it managed to award contracts for a massive 8.4 gigawatts of new capacity. Energy secretary Ed Miliband described it as “a monumental step towards clean power by 2030”. But despite the headline success, this outcome actually makes the government’s own clean power targets harder – not easier – t…
