Britain fines OnlyFans parent company $1.36 million over age verification failure
- On March 27, 2025, Ofcom, Britain’s media regulator, fined Fenix International Limited, the operator of the adults-only social media platform OnlyFans, 1.05 million pounds .
- The fine was issued because Fenix International Limited failed to provide accurate and timely information to Ofcom regarding the effectiveness and implementation of its age assurance measures, specifically concerning its third-party facial estimation technology, during inquiries in 2022 and 2023.
- OnlyFans uses a live selfie to estimate a user's age, requiring an alternative proof of age if the estimation is not above a set 'challenge age,' which OnlyFans initially and incorrectly reported to Ofcom as 23, when it was actually set at 20, a fact Fenix took over 16 months to discover and only informed Ofcom of weeks after learning about it in early January 2024.
- According to Suzanne Cater, Ofcom's enforcement director, "When we use our statutory powers to request information from platforms, they are required, by law, to ensure it is complete, accurate and delivered to us on time."
- The fine, imposed under regulations that predate the Online Safety Act but following its enforcement, underscores Ofcom's commitment to holding platforms to high standards and ensuring regulatory ability, although it is unlikely to significantly impact Fenix International Limited, which generated £1.3 billion in revenue in 2023, while OnlyFans welcomed the closure of the investigation.
