UK foreign minister says Ethiopia visit to focus on migration
The UK plans job-creation partnerships and law-enforcement cooperation to reduce migration from the Horn of Africa, with 30% of Channel crossings from this region, the foreign ministry said.
- On Monday, Feb 2, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will use a visit to Ethiopia to focus on measures to stem rising migrant numbers seeking to reach the United Kingdom, House of Commons and REUTERS reported.
- The British foreign ministry said around 30% of recent Channel crossers were nationals from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan, and illegal immigration has boosted Nigel Farage's Reform UK party in polls.
- The minister argued stronger law-enforcement cooperation is essential to counter smuggler gangs and speed up returns of people with no right to stay, Cooper said, `We are working together to tackle the economic drivers of illegal migration and the criminal gangs who operate globally, `profiting from trading in people.`
- She was due to announce 17 million pounds of funding to tackle violence against women and girls, assist 68,000 children suffering malnutrition, and support displaced people projects.
- To help boost job creation, Cooper will sign an agreement with Gridworks to take forward two energy-transmission projects aimed at creating thousands of good jobs in Ethiopia.
