Ugandan opposition says over 300 supporters detained in presidential campaign

Authorities detained over 300 National Unity Platform supporters to deter opposition ahead of Uganda's January election, amid claims of government intimidation and crowd control measures.

  • More than 300 supporters were detained in Uganda, with scores arrested in Kampala since campaign start, Ssenyonyi said.
  • Amid Museveni's long incumbency, Robert Kyagulanyi challenges 81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni again after finishing second in 2021; Museveni has ruled since 1986 following constitutional changes removing age and term limits.
  • At rallies in Kawempe, security forces used tear gas, water cannon and pepper spray as video aired by NTV showed police deploying canine units and a plain-clothes individual beating supporters, while at least 100 were arrested Monday and dozens detained Tuesday.
  • NUP says the detained were mostly ordinary supporters, campaign coordinators and Wine's aides, while Police said seven were held after clashes and Rusoke Kituuma warned, `Processions are prohibited; candidates should find their supporters at the campaign grounds.`
  • Despite the detentions, the campaign continues and Bobi Wine will campaign in Mukono Municipality on Tuesday; if Yoweri Museveni wins, he will extend his rule to nearly half a century.
