UAE Plans to Build New Ports, Oil Hubs in Gulf of Oman to Bypass Strait of Hormuz Closure
DP World said the new facility could be finished in 18 months as cargo shifts to Fujairah and Khor Fakkan after Hormuz disruptions.
- On Monday, the United Arab Emirates announced plans for a new port and container terminal in Fujairah, led by DP World, to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The project could be completed within 18 months.
- Activity at Jebel Ali, the region's largest container port, fell 90–95 per cent after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, forcing DP World to divert cargo to Fujairah and Khor Fakkan. Both facilities now face heavy congestion.
- Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. will sell offshore crude for collection outside the Strait of Hormuz, indexed to the Dubai benchmark. Earlier this month, DP World announced a US$2 billion investment plan to increase Khor Fakkan capacity.
- These developments reflect a broader UAE initiative to reduce long-term dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. DP World officials stated "there are plans in the works around diversification to get through this disruption."
- Iran has fired nearly 3,000 drones or missiles at the UAE since February, intensifying regional security concerns. Moody's estimates DP World's overall earnings will fall to about US$5.9 billion this year due to the conflict.
