Heavy rains from a typhoon battered a string of Japanese islands off the south of Tokyo on Thursday, and the government urged residents to watch out for landslides and flooding. Record-breaking rainfall was recorded in parts of Izu Island, 280 kilometers (174 miles) south of the Japanese capital, Kyodo News reported. Hundreds of people took shelter in evacuation centers. A man died in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Japan's main island of Honshu.
