2 Kuki-Zo Women Killed in Manipur's Tamenglong

The Kuki-Zo Council said the killings fit a growing pattern of attacks and urged the Manipur and Central governments to protect civilians.

  • On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen attacked Leisangphai village in the Naga-majority Tamenglong district of Manipur at around 3 p.m., killing two Kuki women.
  • The attack follows the September 13 killings of four Kuki civilians in Tamenglong and Noney, with Kuki groups alleging Naga armed groups including NSCN-IM and ZUF-K were responsible.
  • Victims 78-year-old Chonga Sitlhou and 30-year-old Kimboi Singson were attacked while working on their farm; several farmhouses in the area were also reportedly torched.
  • Condemning the "unacceptable and alarming pattern," the Kuki-Zo Council halted burials of victims killed by Naga groups and demanded protection from the Manipur and Central governments.
  • Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangshing called the alleged involvement a "grave and heinous assault" if proven, while violence persists despite repeated appeals from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh for restraint.
