HYDERABAD, TELANGANA, INDIA, JUL 9 – Five people died and over 30 were hospitalized after consuming adulterated toddy, prompting investigations and closure of shops by authorities, the excise department said.
- Two persons died and 28 were hospitalized in Hyderabad by July 8 after allegedly consuming adulterated toddy from shops in Kukatpally and surrounding areas.
- Preliminary investigations linked the hospitalizations to contaminated toddy, but officials said confirmation depends on chemical analysis and medical examinations.
- Affected patients were admitted across three hospitals, including 18 at the state-run Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, with three in critical condition and one on ventilator support.
- Telangana’s Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao paid a visit to NIMS Hospital to meet those affected, warning that strict measures will be taken against the parties responsible. Meanwhile, authorities have sealed four toddy shops and detained five individuals in connection with the incident.
- The incident prompted allegations of negligence against the Prohibition and Excise Department and calls for stringent measures and government aid to affected persons.
