Two children die in New South Wales house fire hours before family was to move states
Police say the blaze left a crime scene and injured five family members, while investigators work to formally identify the two bodies found inside.
- On Monday, a house fire at Bowen Mountain in the Blue Mountains killed two children. Five survivors, including a father and four children, escaped and were transported to Nepean Hospital for treatment.
- Emergency crews arrived at the Lieutenant Bowen Road property within eight minutes to find the two-storey home fully engulfed. Firefighters retreated as the roof collapsed, deeming entry too dangerous.
- More than 50 firefighters and 12 trucks worked for two hours to control the blaze. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Trent Curtin said "dynamic risk assessment" showed entry was too dangerous.
- Police Superintendent Nadine Roberts confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious as a crime scene remains established. Investigators are using drones and detection dogs to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
- Curtin noted the incident was "very tough for our firefighters" as the community rallies to support the family, who had planned to move to Queensland. All firefighters will be offered support.
