- On Wednesday, state news agency Xinhua reported that twelve people were killed in a residential fire in Shantou city, Guangdong province.
- Investigators say the ground-floor store selling household appliances and electrical equipment in Chaonan district was in a four-storey self-built reinforced concrete structure, officials said.
- At around 9.20pm on Tuesday the fire broke out and was put out about 40 minutes later, a woman told media her parents, grandmother and younger brother died in the blaze.
- The blaze prompted calls from China's top leaders to eliminate safety hazards in the housing industry, and Beijing announced sweeping inspections of fire-safety standards in high-rise buildings nationwide, officials said.
- The Shantou blaze adds to a recent string of deadly incidents, including a restaurant fire that killed 22 and a nursing-home apartment fire that killed 20 in recent years.
