Tunnel boring set to begin on new NJ-NY rail link
The $16 billion project will add a new rail crossing and relieve pressure on the century-old tunnels, officials said.
- On Monday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill launched the first tunnel boring machine in North Bergen, New Jersey, for the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel Project, marking excavation's start beneath the Palisades.
- The new two-tube tunnel will replace the 116-year-old North River Tunnel, damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and aims to double rail capacity, carrying 200,000 passengers daily on 450 trains between New Jersey and Manhattan.
- New York and New Jersey successfully sued the Trump administration earlier this year to restore federal funding frozen in February. The federal government committed roughly $12 billion toward the $16 billion undertaking.
- Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared, "We need this tunnel," warning, "The whole national economy could collapse if this tunnel weren't built." Hochul emphasized the project's long-awaited arrival after years of setbacks.
- The 500-foot-long boring machine will grind through approximately 30 feet of rock daily toward the Weehawken and Hoboken border. Officials hope the new rail link will be operational by 2034, easing congestion on the Northeast Corridor.
