22 New Infant Remains Recovered at Tuam Mother and Baby Home
ODAIT has recovered 33 infant remains from the Tuam site, with 28 family DNA samples taken and forensic analysis ongoing to identify the infants.
- On Friday, the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam reported a further 22 sets of infant remains were recovered, bringing the total to 33, with forensic analysis underway.
- Last July, excavation began after Catherine Corless, local historian, found no burial records for almost 800 infants linked to St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home, with radiocarbon dating results confirming remains date from 1925–1961 near the memorial garden.
- Hand excavation has continued under a temporary tent while machine excavation focused on the former workhouse yard, and ODAIT builds a subsurface multi-chambered tank replica to test recovery methods.
- Forensic Science Ireland has received 28 family‑reference DNA samples, ODAIT engages with 175 people, and Galway County Council contributed €2.14m; excavations continue until 2027.
- An update is due in April and work is scheduled to continue into 2027; ODAIT said seven sets likely date to the Workhouse era, with eligibility criteria governing inclusion and past apologies from Bon Secours Sisters and Galway County Council.
