Trump to announce $12 billion in aid to farmers

The $12 billion package includes $11 billion for row-crop farmers and $1 billion for specialty crops to offset losses from tariffs and falling export demand, USDA said.

  • On Monday, President Donald Trump unveiled the $12 billion Farmer Bridge Assistance Program at a White House roundtable, releasing $11 billion immediately for crop payments and reserving $1 billion for other commodities.
  • Trade disruptions have left soybean farmers facing multi-year losses as crop revenue is projected at $144 billion while costs of production reach $179 billion this year.
  • The USDA said eligible farmers with an AGI of $900,000 or less can apply by Dec. 19, with payments capped at $155,000, starting as early as Feb. 28, 2026.
  • While some criticized, Grant Kimberley said, `In the short term, this bridge will help, but it does by no means make people whole,` and Trump stated, `This relief will provide much needed certainty to farmers.`
  • Funded partly by tariff revenue, the administration said $12 billion aids farmers temporarily, while critics warned one-time payments won’t fix structural problems requiring Congress to act on subsidies and the farm bill.
