Trump says US will keep oil and ships seized near Venezuela

The U.S. Coast Guard has seized multiple sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers to cut off revenues for Nicolás Maduro’s regime amid claims linking the actions to drug interdiction efforts.

  • On Monday, President Donald Trump said the US is in active pursuit of an oil tanker and will retain oil and ships seized, including the Panama-flagged Centuries and the sanctioned Bella 1.
  • The announcement came alongside a large U.S. military presence as last week Trump called Venezuela a Foreign Terrorist Organization and ordered a blockade amid 15,000 U.S. troops and 11 warships nearby.
  • U.S. officials note the U.S. has sanctioned hundreds of tankers in a 'shadow fleet', and U.S. Coast Guard interdictions are court-authorized enforcement; Clayton Seigle said, 'If you cut off all oil exports... the regime in Caracas would face extreme pressure'.
  • Legal experts warn that the blockade on sanctioned tankers violates international law, noting a naval blockade is an act of war and the Foreign Terrorist Organization designation does not authorize force.
  • An April 7 intelligence memo from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence found Maduro likely does not cooperate with cartels, while the U.S. administration frames pressure around fentanyl but aims for regime change and access to Venezuela's oil.
