Trump says he will patrol D.C. streets with police, military
President Trump will join federal officers and 2,400 National Guard members patrolling Washington, D.C., where over 630 arrests have been made amid a federal crime crackdown, officials said.
On Thursday night, President Donald Trump plans to join a patrol in Washington, D.C., riding alongside police and National Guard to assess operations, he told conservative commentator Todd Starnes.
After declaring a public safety emergency earlier this month, President Donald Trump seized control of the Metropolitan Police Department on Aug. 11 and mobilized 800 DC National Guard troops plus around 1,200 from Republican-led states.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said 630 arrests and 86 illegal firearms seizures occurred since the operation began, including 251 people in the country illegally.
Critics have protested the federal intervention, with D.C. demonstrators chanting "Free DC" and more than 125 civil rights organizations urging the U.S. Congress to oppose it; the president's order may last only 30 days without congressional approval.
Experts warned that using Military and National Guard forces for civilian policing risks escalating tensions and eroding trust, as recent presidential memoranda like the June 7, 2025 order set a concerning precedent.
