Trump says he has call scheduled with Putin to discuss possible case of pneumonic plague in Russia
The CDC said there is no indication of a broader U.S. threat as officials monitor the suspected case and await more information from Russia.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced a call is scheduled with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a suspected pneumonic plague case in Irkutsk, Russia, following the death of a laboratory worker.
Following the death of Darya Shipilova, a staffer at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, Russian officials reported that plague was not found among her contacts despite the "pneumonia of undetermined" origin.
Since Friday, the State Department has been in contact with Russian officials regarding the incident, while the CDC stated "at this time, there is no indication of a broader threat to the United States."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it is "incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world," as United States officials issued a health alert urging Americans in Irkutsk to exercise caution.
Offering U.S. assistance for what he called "a rough disease," Trump told reporters the call with Putin would take place "very soon" to discuss the situation.
