The rise in petrol prices is disproportionately affecting low-income Americans. According to an analysis by the Washington Post, for households earning about $40,000 a year or less, the costs of fuel used for home-work travel now account for an average of 4% of income. For households in the upper quarter, with earnings of $100,000 or more, the same costs amount instead to less than $10,000.
