Trump says wind turbine imports threaten national security
Trump stopped short of new tariffs and told trade officials to negotiate with suppliers from five major countries within 180 days.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump declared wind turbine and component imports a national security threat, directing his administration to pursue international agreements rather than imposing immediate tariffs.
Following a Section 232 investigation launched in August 2025, the Commerce Department found cybersecurity vulnerabilities, radar interference, and excessive reliance on foreign-made equipment posed national security risks.
Trump also cited wind energy's intermittent nature, arguing it is unreliable and diverts the United States electrical grid from more stable energy sources.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer must "jointly pursue negotiation of agreements or continue any current negotiations of agreements" and report back within 180 days.
While no new tariffs were imposed, the White House proclamation notes that "additional trade measures, including tariffs, could be considered later" depending on negotiation outcomes.
