Trump backs Bouchard in Michigan's only competitive GOP House primary
Trump’s backing could boost Bouchard in a district Republicans see as a potential tossup, where he faces three rivals in the Aug. 4 primary.
On Monday, President Donald Trump endorsed Army veteran Michael Bouchard in the Republican primary race for Michigan's 10th Congressional District to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. John James.
Trump touted the 32-year-old candidate's military service, including his Bronze Star and 10 years of service; Bouchard faces several opponents in the Aug. 4 primary, including former prosecutor Robert Lulgjuraj.
Following the president's move, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and Rep. Lisa McClain endorsed Bouchard, citing his commitment to "safe streets, secure borders, and a strong economy."
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Katie Smith criticized the endorsement as a "continuation of the failed status quo," while Lulgjuraj previously positioned himself as the race's more "MAGA, grassroots" candidate.
The 10th District remains competitive, where James previously defeated Carl Marlinga by about 26,000 votes; analysts currently view the race as slightly favoring Republicans, though Trump-endorsed candidates have faced mixed results in Michigan.
