Trump approves $25 million in disaster aid to help western Alaska recover from storms
The approved $25 million federal aid will cover 100% of relief costs for 90 days to support recovery from storms that displaced 2,000 residents and destroyed most buildings in some villages.
- On Wednesday, President Donald Trump approved a federal disaster declaration for Western Alaska and authorized $25 Million to aid recovery from the typhoon earlier this month.
- Governor Mike Dunleavy, Governor of Alaska, formally requested disaster aid on Oct. 16, and the Alaska congressional delegation urged quick federal response in an Oct. 17 letter.
- Following the storm, officials reported two of the hardest-hit communities were the Yup'ik villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, where one person died and two remain missing.
- The declaration authorizes federal cost share for all relief assistance for the next 90 days, and FEMA will coordinate recovery with the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
- More than 650 people were brought to Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, where about 338 stayed in two shelters; the state offers emergency assistance applications open through November 9 with $21,250 for home repairs and $21,250 for other needs.
