Poll: Trump approval hits record low, handing Democrats a clear midterm edge
The poll shows 66% of Americans disapprove of Trump, while registered voters give Democrats an 8-point lead for House control.
On Sunday, a new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll revealed President Donald Trump's job approval rating hit a record low of 33%, with 66% of Americans disapproving of his performance.
Economic dissatisfaction drives these numbers; 75% of Americans rate the economy negatively and 66% believe Trump is "using the presidency to enrich himself" according to the poll.
Likely voters support Democratic candidates over Republicans by an 8-percentage point margin in congressional elections, with 58% preferring a Democratic-led Congress to act as a check on Trump.
Bolstering their lead among independent likely voters by 21 points, Democrats also benefit from greater enthusiasm among their supporters, who express higher voting certainty than Republicans.
Republicans face a competitive Senate map in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, as Democrats aim to replicate the 2018 "blue wave" that netted 41 House seats.
