Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent refuses to say whether Trump remains exempt from IRS audits
Bessent declined to address whether Trump, his family and businesses still have IRS audit protection as lawmakers pressed for answers on the disputed settlement.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent refused on Wednesday to confirm whether President Donald Trump and his family retain IRS audit immunity, citing ongoing litigation during a Senate Finance Committee hearing.
The administration recently abandoned a $1.776 billion compensation fund amid intense political backlash, raising questions about the related settlement resolving Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.
Sen. Ron Wyden demanded an explanation, asking Bessent, "Does the IRS audit immunity given to Trump, his family, and his businesses still stand?" Bessent declined to answer, citing the unresolved legal dispute.
After several failed attempts to get answers, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto called the refusal "outrageous," while a federal judge in Florida reopened Trump's lawsuit to address transparency concerns regarding the settlement.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche previously stated "nothing has changed" regarding the immunity provision, though reports note a separate, long-standing audit of tax techniques could result in an estimated $100 million liability.
