Transport truck driver sentenced in horrific crash that killed Olympian, young mother
Sukhwinder Sidhu was also banned from driving for seven years after a construction-zone crash killed Alexandra Paul and injured four others, including her infant son.
- On Wednesday, an Ontario judge sentenced truck driver Sukhwinder Sidhu to two and a half years in prison and a seven-year driving ban for the crash that killed former Canadian Olympian Alexandra Paul and injured her infant son in Melancthon Township on August 22, 2023.
- Court records revealed Sidhu was speeding at about 107 km/h in a marked 60 km/h construction zone when the seven-vehicle collision occurred. The driver had been working for over 26 hours, including at least 16 hours of driving, before the crash.
- Mitchell Islam, Paul's husband, told the court their son "has been stripped of her enduring love." Her father, Gordon Paul, said her future "held unlimited possibilities" and mourned he "didn't get a chance to say goodbye."
- The judge weighed Sidhu's lack of a criminal record and family ties as mitigating factors against aggravating elements, including his driving history and speeding in the marked construction area. These violations justified the penitentiary sentence.
- Sidhu apologized in court, stating he "cannot imagine the pain" of Paul's son growing up without his mother. He acknowledged the tragedy's impact "did not end when the crash ended," offering a tearful apology to injured victims.
