Torrential rains brought by Japan typhoon kill four, NHK says
Authorities said 45,000 homes lost power as record rain triggered landslides, flooding and transport disruptions across the Tokyo region.
Four people died and at least six remained missing after Typhoon Dujuan dumped record rainfall across eastern Japan, triggering landslides and flooding in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.
Authorities issued evacuation advisories for more than 1.6 million people as the typhoon disrupted the region, with Oshima recording 832mm of rainfall in 48 hours—the highest on record.
In Yokosuka, a 64-year-old woman died after mud swept into her home, while a 51-year-old worker perished in Sodegaura; nearly 48,320 households lost electricity, according to Tokyo Electric Power Grid.
Japan Airlines cancelled roughly 135 flights and All Nippon Airways 140 on Monday, while East Japan Railway suspended Sobu, Narita, and Sotobo line services amid widespread disruption.
By Tuesday morning, Dujuan moved northeast over the Pacific at about 50km per hour, though the Japan Meteorological Agency warned saturated ground could trigger further landslides.
