Iconic West End Theatre to Be Renamed After Judi Dench in Honour of Actress's Legacy
The rename follows a renovation and will make it the first West End theatre named after an actress, officials said.
On Tuesday, London's Shaftesbury Theatre announced it will be renamed the Judi Dench Theatre from February 2027, honoring the 91-year-old stage and screen legend's contribution to the performing arts.
The venue's owner, the Taffner family, initiated the change to recognize Dench's extraordinary talent and her service as a founding member of the Theatre of Comedy in the 1980s.
"The Shaftesbury Theatre has always held a special place in my heart," Dench said, calling the honor "truly overwhelming," while her seven-decade career includes an Oscar and seven Olivier Awards.
Chief Executive Eleanor Lang stated the renaming will follow a renovation, including restoration of the building's signature opening dome, ensuring "Dame Judi's legacy continues to inspire future generations of performers and audiences alike."
This renaming marks the first time a West End theatre has been named after an actress, cementing the historic venue's legacy as the only London theatre with a dome that opens since its 1911 opening as the New Prince's Theatre.
