WAYNE COUNTY, MICHIGAN, JUN 22 – A volunteer deacon and trained church safety team stopped a heavily armed gunman, preventing a mass shooting and leaving one security member injured, officials said.
- On June 22, 2025, volunteer security personnel intervened to prevent a mass shooting at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan.
- The incident began when deacon Richard Pryor, arriving late to the scene, deliberately drove his pickup truck into the armed gunman Brian Browning as he approached the church dressed in tactical gear.
- Browning fired numerous rounds, wounding a security team member, before security guard Jay Trombley fatally shot Browning to end the attack.
- Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong expressed deep appreciation for the courageous efforts of the church staff, crediting them with saving numerous lives and stopping what could have become a major mass shooting.
