Police Investigate After Three Teenagers Killed when Audi A3 Entered River Wear
Four people were in the car, and a 17-year-old boy survived and was arrested as police investigate the circumstances.
On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, three teenagers died when a black Audi A3 entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland, with a 17-year-old survivor arrested in connection with the incident.
Authorities responded to reports of the vehicle entering the water at Panns Bank shortly before 1:30 PM, prompting a multi-hour rescue operation involving North East Ambulance Service and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
Police confirmed four people were in the car at the time; the 17-year-old survivor reached safety and was taken to hospital with non-serious injuries before his arrest.
Chief Supt Scott Cowie, Area Commander for Sunderland, described it as "a truly tragic incident where three young people have lost their lives," as next of kin were informed and supported by officers.
Investigators are seeking CCTV or dashcam footage by calling 101, referencing NP-20260929-0589, as police chiefs recently warned that more than 23,000 people have been killed or injured involving drivers aged 17 to 24 in the past five years.
