Two Rescuers Die in Warehouse Collapse

NORTH DELHI, JUL 11 – The building was previously marked unsafe and evacuated, but collapsed early Friday killing one man, with police registering an FIR and investigation ongoing.

  • A three-storey commercial building collapsed around 2 AM on Friday in the Mithaipul locality of North Delhi, killing 46-year-old Manoj Sharma and damaging a nearby truck.
  • The building had been declared unsafe and evacuated in June before tunnelling work for the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor began, but some shops and a godown continued operating despite notices.
  • Rescue teams coordinated debris removal with the NDRF and Delhi Police, pulling Sharma from the rubble and taking him to Hindu Rao Hospital where he was declared dead; no other injuries were reported.
  • The police have filed a case citing death by negligence and negligent conduct related to building activities as per applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, while the DMRC announced a ₹5 lakh compensation for Sharma’s family and initiated a comprehensive inquiry.
  • Authorities continue site safety efforts and probe the cause, with concerns raised about metro construction’s possible role, while local residents and officials await investigation findings and necessary actions.
