Meta introduces group chats for up to 50 users on Threads and expands messaging features to the European Union, reaching over 400 million monthly active users globally.

  • Today, Meta is launching group DMs on Threads and will begin rolling out messaging, including individual and group chats, across the European Union.
  • Following last July's one-on-one direct messages rollout, Meta is extending messaging to groups to deepen in-app connections.
  • Group chats support up to 50 participants and require mutual follows to limit misuse, allowing Threads users ages 18 and up to share media, name chats, and use link invites on the mobile-only app.
  • Earlier this week, Threads VP Emily Dalton Smith said group chats will not be end-to-end encrypted, and users will control who can start group chats with mutual follows required.
  • Despite rapid growth, the rollout excludes the UK and Australia while Meta works to expand there, and X faces scrutiny from security researchers over its XChat service.
