Thousands of Romanians Attend Consecration in One of World’s Largest Orthodox Churches
The National Cathedral, covering 17,800 square meters of frescoes and mosaics, cost €270 million, mostly public funds, and holds 5,000 worshippers, marking a national religious milestone.
- On Sunday, the People's Salvation Cathedral opened after years of construction, drawing large crowds and attended by President Nicusor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
- Proposals for a national cathedral were debated for more than a century but delayed by two world wars and communist rule, with the Romanian Orthodox Church framing it as a symbol of national identity.
- The interior is covered in extensive frescoes and mosaics created with art historians and contemporary artists, covering 17,800 square meters, the cathedral's website says.
- Authorities restricted traffic for the consecration, and with an interior capacity of 5,000 worshippers, many watched the service on TV screens outside the cathedral.
- The project has so far cost a reported 270 million euros , with critics saying public funds could have supported schools and hospitals while ongoing works remain unfinished.
