Thousands of Kurds in the streets of Strasbourg, to demand, as every year, the release of the historical leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned in the Turkish jails since 15 February 1999. Protesters come from all over Europe. This year, their claim also concerns the status of Rojava, a northern Syrian territory administered for more than 10 years by the Kurds, but in the process of being taken over by the Syrian government.
This Saturday's Kurdish demonstration in Strasbourg brought together only 3000 (according to the police) to 10,000 people (according to the organizers) instead of the 15,000 announced. Yet for the first time, many participated in this traditional gathering of the Kurdish diaspora in Europe. They had mobilized to defend Rojava, Syrian Kurdistan.
