Emergency services are battling severe forest fires in several regions of Spain and Portugal. Thousands of hectares of vegetation have been destroyed, and hundreds of people have been forced to flee their homes.

In Portugal, seven major fires are still active in the north and centre of the country. Spain, also affected by this wave of fires, fights against two major fires in the provinces of Avila and Caceres.
Thousands of firefighters battled to extinguish a dozen forest fires that raged in northern Portugal and central Spain overnight and into today, in the biggest wave of fires on the Iberian Peninsula so far this year after weeks of summer heat, Reuters reports.
