Thirty Years in the Mountains: Utah’s Landmark Cancer Survivor Event Marks a Historic Milestone
The Utah cancer-survivor tradition began in 1996 with 12 climbers and now draws up to 200 participants each year, organizers said.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the 30th annual Survivors at the Summit will gather up to 400 participants at Brighton Resort in the Wasatch Mountains to celebrate cancer survivorship and resilience.
The tradition began in 1996 when founding members of Cancer Wellness House, now known as Survivor Wellness, hiked Utah's King's Peak carrying flags inscribed with names of loved ones impacted by cancer.
Iconic yellow Tribute Flags, donated by Jack Kirkham of Springbar Tents and screen-printed by Skyline High School students, became the event's enduring symbol by 1998. Activities include guided hikes, mountain biking, and a Celebration of Life.
Registration opened May 15, 2026, with tickets limited to 400 participants; early bird pricing ranges from $15 to $30, with all proceeds funding free programs provided by Survivor Wellness.
In 2025, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued a mayoral proclamation declaring the event "Survivors at the Summit Day," officially recognizing three decades of community impact for cancer survivors in Utah.
