Texas-Born Magnier Sprints to His 3rd Stage Win at Giro. Vingegaard Protects Overall Lead
Magnier earned his third Giro stage win after Jasper Stuyven set up the sprint, while Jonas Vingegaard stayed 4:03 ahead overall.
On Thursday, French rider Paul Magnier won stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia, claiming a bunch sprint victory in Pieve di Soligo. The 22-year-old secured his third stage win of the race.
Soudal Quick-Step's Jasper Stuyven delivered a perfect lead-out for Magnier on the 171km route from Fai della Paganella. The team neutralized a four-man breakaway before the steep Muro di Ca del Poggio climb, setting up the decisive sprint.
Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard finished safely in the main bunch, protecting his pink jersey with a lead of four minutes and three seconds over Felix Gall. Vingegaard attacked on the final climb but settled for group position.
Magnier reclaimed the points classification jersey after holding off Edoardo Zambanini and Jonathan Milan in the final sprint. He told reporters, "My teammates made it into a sprint and I'm so happy to win."
Stage 19 on Friday presents a 151-kilometer mountain trek from Feltre to Alleghe in the Dolomites. The peloton faces six categorized climbs and 5,000m of vertical ascent, a pivotal test for general classification contenders.
The sprinter of the Belgian band Soudal-Quick-Step, who already won twice on this Tour of Italy, again dominated the other sprinters on Thursday during the 18th stage in the north-east.
Eulálio stood out on a day that predicted calm, fell, recovered, was the only one to test the Visma on the final climb and walked to the attack on the approach to the goal. Magnier reigned at the end of the sprint.
