Thieves steal two paintings from Renoir Museum on French Riviera

Police are searching for the thieves after two suspects fled with three paintings valued at about €9 million, authorities said.

  • On Tuesday, two thieves broke into the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, using an electric saw to cut four paintings from frames before fleeing. Police arrived within five minutes, forcing the pair to abandon two canvases while escaping with two others valued at €9 million.
  • The Musée Renoir, opened in 1960, occupies Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir's final residence. This theft follows an August Europol report warning that European museum thefts are shifting toward violent, confrontational methods as organized criminal groups increasingly recruit operatives via social media.
  • Mayor Bryan Masson confirmed that while police recovered two paintings, 'Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano' and 'Young Woman at the Well' remain missing. An active manhunt is underway for the two suspects.
  • Describing the theft as a "particularly serious act" targeting the town's "history and heritage," Masson said the museum now faces "a new form of organised crime." He called for state financial support to strengthen security at vulnerable cultural institutions.
  • Art theft expert Arthur Brand warns that the stolen Renoirs are effectively unsellable on legitimate markets, as "nobody will touch" high-profile stolen works. Thieves may ransom items or hide them for years, making recovery difficult.
