Thieves steal $1M worth in craft whiskey from Washington distillery

Thieves used a sophisticated carrier fraud scheme to steal 12,000 bottles of limited-edition whiskey worth nearly $1 million, including rare 10-year-old Garryana, officials said.

  • Thieves stole 12,000 bottles of craft whiskey worth nearly $1 million from Westland Distillery's Burlington warehouse on July 31, 2023.
  • The theft occurred when a freight truck driver presented paperwork authorizing pickup of whiskies bound for New Jersey, but the shipment never arrived.
  • The stolen stock included limited-edition Garryana 10th anniversary whiskey, Westland single malt, and Watchpost blended whiskey, with Garryana considered irreplaceable.
  • Mark Gillespie, WhiskyCast host, said the rarity of the bottles will make it difficult to sell the stolen whiskey and advised calling the cops if offered any.
  • Westland is looking into the loss and intends to offer the remaining 4,500 bottles of Garryana for sale on October 18 at their tasting room in Seattle.
