'They'll be recalled' – PENGASSAN confirms Dangote Refinery sacked all Nigerian workers

  • On September 25, 2025, Dangote Petroleum Refinery dismissed all its Nigerian employees as part of a comprehensive restructuring of operations at its Nigerian facility.
  • This development took place less than a day after nearly 90 percent of the employees became members of the union representing senior staff in Nigeria's petroleum and natural gas sector, following recent tensions over union activities and alleged sabotage incidents.
  • Management explained that the terminations were essential to protect the refinery from ongoing sabotage incidents that compromised safety and hindered its operational performance.
  • Affected employees were instructed to surrender company property and complete exit procedures, while the finance team was assigned to determine their benefits based on employment agreements. Meanwhile, PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo affirmed that the company intends to reinstate all those dismissed.
  • The development intensifies the ongoing trade dispute with PENGASSAN, may impact refinery operations and stakeholder relations, and draws attention to the refinery's efforts to maintain long-term stability and energy security in Nigeria and Africa.
