A Mexican man walked free after nearly 20 years behind bars Friday, finally acquitted in a case that strained relations with France and became emblematic of delayed justice in the Latin American country.
In 2005, Florence Cassez and Israel Vallarta were arrested in Mexico, accused of being the head of a gang of kidnappers. Although the French woman was released in 2013, her former companion was detained for more than nineteen years.
Israel Vallarta, also arrested in 2005, spent two decades in pre-trial detention, and his entourage plans to seek redress for the errors and tortures committed against him.
After spending almost 20 years in prison, Israel Vallarta has left the Altiplano prison on Friday.
