Dorset Man Arrested in Ecuador over 'Murder' of Colombian Model
Colombian prosecutors say he is accused of beating the 36-year-old model to death and hiding her body in a suitcase before fleeing the country.
Ecuador's National Police arrested British citizen Matthew Foster-Smith at Quito International Airport following an Interpol Red Notice for the murder of 36-year-old Colombian model Natalia Villalba Angarita.
On June 22, cleaning staff discovered Angarita's remains inside a suitcase in her Bogota apartment after her mother, Claudia, became concerned when she stopped taking calls last Thursday.
Investigators allege the 46-year-old medic entered the apartment on June 18, assaulted the victim, and concealed the body; Foster-Smith fled via the Rumichaca International Bridge on June 21.
Colombia's Attorney General's Office seeks to prosecute the suspect for aggravated femicide, a charge carrying a prison sentence of 40 to 50 years if convicted.
Justicia Para Todos, a Colombian foundation assisting femicide victims' families, stated, "Behind every statistic there is a life, a story, and a family," calling for a thorough investigation.
A suitcase was found in Natalia Villalba Angarita's shower. Inside the bag was the model's murdered body. Now a man has been arrested for the murder, writes El Colombiano. The man claims he is innocent – and is trying to use the World Cup as an alibi.
