Engineers seek to extract Army vehicle submerged in Lithuanian forest, search for 4 troops
- On Thursday, March 27, 2025, U.S. And Lithuanian troops began struggling to recover four American Army soldiers whose armored M88 Hercules vehicle was discovered submerged in 15 feet of water in a swampy training area near Pabradė, Lithuania, approximately 6 miles from the Belarus border.
- The four soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, went missing early on Tuesday during a unit training mission to recover another Army vehicle.
- U.S. Army Europe and Africa stated on Friday that cranes, a large-capacity pump, and more than 30 tons of gravel have been brought in to drain the water and mud to extract the 70-ton vehicle, but teams have been unable to access the vehicle.
- Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of the 1st Armored Division, stated, "This will be a long and difficult recovery operation, but we are absolutely committed to bringing our soldiers home."
- Due to the incredibly wet and marshy conditions which cannot support the weight of the recovery equipment without significant engineering improvements and slow draining due to groundwater seepage, a U.S. Navy dive crew and 150 personnel including engineers and additional equipment from the Polish Armed Forces are assisting in the ongoing recovery efforts.
