Truck breakdown in Niger strands passengers and leaves at least 49 dead in the Sahara Desert
Two survivors walked more than 50 kilometers to alert authorities after the truck broke down and left 49 people dead of thirst, officials said.
- On Thursday, authorities reported that 49 people died of thirst in a remote Sahara desert district in Niger after their truck broke down more than 80 kilometers west of Assamaka.
- The group had been returning from Mali after attending a Muslim festival when their vehicle veered off its intended route from Telhandek, leaving passengers stranded for several days without water.
- Only two people survived by trekking more than 50 kilometers to Assamaka to alert authorities, who discovered the remaining victims in mass graves within what the governorate described as a "hostile environment."
- While returning from the scene, rescue teams encountered another broken-down truck carrying more than 60 people stranded for three days, distributing water to the "exhausted and distressed travellers" so they could resume their journey.
