Biarritz to swap 'La Négresse' name for Street of Joy

The inhabitants of Biarritz had the choice between three proposals to replace the name of the street of "La Negresse", considered offensive. The town of Biarritz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) planned to replace the name of the street of La Negresse, subject to much controversy. It will now be called "rue de l'Alligresse" after citizen consultation.

A road in the seaside French resort has been the subject of a legal tug of war over a legacy of colonialism and a court order.

After a citizen consultation started on 18 April, the rue de la Négresse, in Biarritz, could soon be renamed rue L'alliresse. More than half of the participants chose this name in front of the Basque and Gascones proposals. The new name will be submitted to the vote of the municipal council on 5 May.
