Service Member Dies After Fall Before Navy-UTSA Game, Air Force Says

The service member was injured during a pregame rappel demonstration and died at a local hospital, Air Force officials said.

  • An Air Force service member died Saturday after falling while rappelling from the Alamodome ceiling during a pregame demonstration at the UTSA football game in San Antonio.
  • Four officers were set to rappel onto the field as part of UTSA's annual Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans game when the service member appeared to lose control, sliding down the line before striking the turf.
  • The service member was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. The game between the UTSA Roadrunners and Navy Midshipmen proceeded after a 10-minute kickoff delay.
  • Afterward, the University issued a statement saying it was "deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight's football game" and activated wellbeing services for campus community members.
  • The Air Force has not released the service member's identity as the incident remains under investigation. The unit's headquarters are at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, though Detachment 2 operates from San Antonio.
