The $5.8 billion joint venture employs over 1,500 staff across five countries to develop software and zonal electrical architecture for upcoming EVs.
- On Wednesday, Rivian and the Volkswagen Group said their $5.8 billion joint venture, RV Tech, is off to a strong start and moving fast to bring the co-developed technology to market.
- Last November, the companies created RV Tech to co-develop software after Volkswagen Group's Cariad division faced delays and layoffs, giving Volkswagen access to Rivian software and Rivian capital.
- The JV is building a zonal electrical architecture to underpin future vehicles, centralizing computing into zones for OTA updates and autonomous features while reducing wiring; Wassym Bensaid said electrical architectures for initial VW EVs are complete.
- RV Tech's architecture is slated to underpin future VW Group EVs across brands, with Rivian R2 mid-size SUV showcasing the tech in the U.S. in the first half of next year alongside Audi, Scout Motor, and Volkswagen ID.1 models.
- More than 1,500 employees across the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Serbia and Germany are racing to develop and validate systems during winter testing as the JV aims to challenge BYD and Tesla.
