On the road to disaster: critically few children are still being born in Hungary - An ominous demographic situation is emerging.
We lost a small town's worth of Hungarians in a month. In fact, the fertility rate has also dropped significantly.
According to preliminary data, 5,696 children were born and 9,639 people died in May 2025. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of births decreased by 10, deaths by 2.3%, while marriages increased by 2.5%.
Ten percent fewer children were born than a year earlier, and the population decreased by 26,000 in five months.
